This Honey Mustard Sauce is sweet, tangy, a tad bit spicy, and ultra-creamy. It takes minutes to whip together and makes the best dipping sauce, dressing, or flavorful addition to pork, chicken, and roasted veggies.

This Homemade Honey Mustard Is Way Better Than Store-Bought

Honey mustard sauce is one of my favorite things to make from scratch. Perfect for dunking, dipping, or smearing all over just about anything, today’s recipe is SUPER easy to make. You’ll need the following ingredients: mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, white vinegar, yellow mustard, a pinch of salt, and for a bit of heat, hot sauce and cayenne pepper (both optional). It’s creamy, tangy, super versatile and customizable. Why buy store-bought when you can make your own homemade version as sweet, creamy, spicy, or bold as you’d like! Let’s do it!

Turn On the Flavor With A Bit Of Heat

If you want your honey mustard to really pop, add a little hot sauce (Sriracha is my go-to) and a pinch of cayenne pepper. It’s not enough to make it spicy, but it’s just enough to balance the sweetness and add depth. These additions are optional; dial it up or down to suit your taste, making it as mild or fiery as you like.

Ingredient Substitutions

You can find the printable recipe with measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of this page.

As written, this recipe is vegetarian and maybe gluten-free. To be safe, double-check that the Dijon, yellow mustard, Sriracha, and vinegar you are using/purchasing are all certified gluten-free.

To make this honey mustard sauce vegan, swap regular (egg-based) mayonnaise for a vegan mayo alternative. Instead of honey, use maple syrup or agave instead of honey.

  • Mayonnaise: Plain Yogurt can be used for a low-fat version. You can also try making homemade mayonnaise.
  • White vinegar: Easily swap with apple cider vinegar or fresh lemon juice.
  • Hot sauce: Sriracha is smooth, slightly sweet, garlicky, and tangy. It’s my go-to hot sauce for honey mustard. Frank’s RedHot Original would also work, although it is less sweet and more vinegary.
All the ingredients for homemade honey mustard sauce—mayonnaise, Dijon and yellow mustard, honey, vinegar, hot sauce, cayenne, and salt—are neatly arranged in small bowls on a countertop, ready to be whisked into a tangy, spicy dip

How to Use Honey Mustard Sauce

Honey mustard is incredibly versatile! Whether dipping, drizzling, or spreading, this creamy, homemade sauce adds the perfect zing to any dish. Keep a jar in your fridge, and you’ll never run out of ways to use it!

Dipping Sauce – Honey mustard is a classic dipping sauce that brings out the best in all things crispy and golden (McDonald’s chicken nuggets, anyone?) Serve this creamy sauce with air fryer chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, or popcorn chicken for a kid-friendly favorite that adults love, too. It also makes a perfect partner for fries, sweet potato fries, and crispy roasted potatoes, adding a flavorful twist to your usual sides. For game day or snacking, pair it with warm soft pretzel bites for that ideal salty-sweet combo.

Meat and Mains – Honey mustard sauce complements proteins perfectly, especially pork, chicken, and fish. Drizzle it over grilled sausage or brush it on baked pork chops as a finishing glaze. It’s also fantastic served alongside crispy pork schnitzel or as a dipping option for buttermilk fried chicken. For sandwiches, it works especially well as a spread on grilled cheese or fried chicken sandwiches, adding moisture and flavor. You can also use the sauce as a marinade as I did in this Instant Pot honey mustard chicken thigh recipe and this baked honey mustard chicken recipe.

Roasted Veggies – Honey mustard is an excellent dipping sauce for seasonal roasted veggies like carrots, parsnips, and zucchini. Try tossing it with roasted Brussels sprouts just before serving to enhance their caramelized flavor.

Storage Instructions

This delicious dipping sauce definitely needs to be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Stored properly, it will last about a week, but it will taste the best when enjoyed within 5-6 days. Remember to give it a good stir before serving. This recipe makes about a cup of sauce (16-18 tablespoons). You can adjust the total servings in the recipe card below. Finally, please do not try to freeze this honey mustard sauce; mayonnaise does not thaw well.
