Overnight Oats with Yogurt

Prior to having my son I never put much thought into breakfast. Fast forward to motherhood and mornings look a whole lot different. A whole lot crazier.

Ingredients

  • Quick-cooking oats: Remember to purchase and use gluten-free rolled oats if you’re sensitive to gluten.
  • Fresh fruit (optional): For this recipe, I added strawberries. Other delicious fruit includes raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, mango, peaches, and nectarines.
  • Yogurt: Use your favorite yogurt. To make this recipe vegan, use a plant-based, dairy-free yogurt.
  • Milk: This recipe is great with cow’s milk or your favorite non-dairy milk including almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, etc.
  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds are high in fiber and protein plus they help make your oats extra creamy.
  • Sweetener: I love adding a little honey. Keep this recipe vegan by adding maple syrup instead.

How to Make Overnight Oats with Yogurt

  1. Transfer the rolled oats, milk, yogurt, fresh fruit (I added strawberries), chia seeds, and sweetener to a bowl and mix well to combine.
  2. (Optional) Divide and transfer the combined oats and yogurt to individual single-serve mason jars. Layer with fresh fruit and jam, if desired.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or seal the jars with a tight-fitting lid. Transfer to the refrigerator for 4-12 hours, or until the oats are softened, chewy, and thickened.

When I first started making overnight oats I always put them in jars as a way to entice Octavian into eating. I soon realized that wasn’t necessary since he loved them so much. Now I usually just put them in jars if I’m trying something new, need a few ready and available as a grab-and-go snack or lunch, or if I know people are coming over for breakfast and I don’t feel like cooking.

Favorite Toppings and Mix-Ins

  • Nut butter
  • Protein powder
  • Chocolate chips or cacao nibs
  • Flax seeds or hemp seeds
  • Granola
  • Almond or vanilla extract
  • Jam or jelly
  • Dried fruit

Hi! Can You use Steel Cut Oats?

    1. Jessica Randhawa says:

Great question! Steel-cut oats are much tougher and donโ€™t soften as easily overnight, so I wouldn’t recommend using them in this recipe. If you prefer the texture of steel-cut oats, you can try soaking them longer (at least 12 hours) or briefly pre-cooking them first. Otherwise, I’d stick with rolled oats for the best creamy, tender texture. Enjoy!

I love oatmeal cooked with water. After the cooking I add 3 spoons of vanilla yoghurt and I’m good to enjoy it mornings and lunch time. Hahaha sometimes I’m so greedy that I get me some for dinner. It’s such a good meal.
