What is a Butter Board?

A butter board is literally a board or small serving tray covered with softened butter. Served with chunks of bread, the exciting part about butter boards is their countless toppings and flavor combinations, including everything from edible flowers to fresh herbs and salty meats.

How to Make a Butter Board

Start by transferring the room temperature butter to the bowl of a mixer. Add two tablespoons of honey and ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon. Combine until smooth.

Spread the butter onto a clean serving board. In the case of butter boards, you don’t want the surface of the butter to be perfectly smooth. Some texture is ideal.

Once the butter has been spread, drizzle with the remaining honey and sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon. Break the honeycomb into bite-size chunks and top the butter with the honeycomb.

Serve with warm bread, rolls, or crackers.

Tips and Tricks

  • Serve with utensils: They may be for sharing, but I highly recommend serving your butter board with small plates and butter knives. Less chance of bread crumbs flaking off into the butter or risk of sneaky double-scoopers.
  • Soften naturally: Try to avoid softening the butter using the microwave as the fat, and the milk solids may separate.
  • Some salt is needed: Whether it’s from salted butter or a little sprinkle of flaky sea salt over the top of the honey (or both), you’ll want to add a little salt to help draw out and tie together the sweet honey with the cinnamon flavors.
  • Easier cleanup: For easier cleanup, line your board with parchment paper and spread the butter directly over the parchment paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will butter ruin my cutting board?

No, the butter should not ruin your cutting board. When you’re done with the butter board, you will want to scrape off any excess butter. Rinse it under very hot water to melt off any extra butter left behind and wash it as normal. If you make a lot of these, you might want to invest in some mineral oil to coat your boards after you’re done washing them to help prolong the life of your cutting board.

Can I make a butter board ahead of time?

I do not recommend making them ahead of time, especially if the recipe calls for processing the butter with other ingredients (like in this recipe). However, if you must, keep your board refrigerator until approximately 1 hour before serving, then remove it from the refrigerator and allow the butter to come to room temperature before serving.

Popular butter board toppings:

Edible flowers, chopped nuts, jam, preserves, dried fruit, fresh or roasted garlic, fresh herbs (basil, rosemary, thyme), chives, sliced onion, goat cheese, chili oil, micro greens, lemon or orange zest, and meat.

Can I use cream cheese instead of butter?

Yes, this recipe would taste fantastic with spreadable cream cheese instead of butter.
