This is the best Avocado Toast you’ll ever make. No need for fancy, over-the-top toppings, all you need is toasted bread, smashed avocado, a little lemon juice, olive oil, and a sprinkle of salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.

The secret to achieving perfect avocado toast? Simple, fresh, quality ingredients – that’s it.

Of course, there are countless ways to dress up avocado toast. From thick-cut bacon to drippy fried eggs, sliced tomatoes to smoked salmon. You can even top your toast with beans, salsa, and fruit.

But before the toppings, comes the toast and this is the best-tasting avocado toast recipe you’ll ever make (in my humble opinion). Let’s make it!

How to Pick the Perfect Avocado

Will you be smashing or slicing your avocado? There’s no wrong answer, although I find smashed avocado to be a little easier to eat. Anyway, when shopping for ripe avocados pick ones that give just slightly when squeezed in the palm of your hand. Too much give or soft spots indicate that the avocado may be rotten, so I’d pass on those – this is especially important if you plan to slice your avocado. Slicing avocado calls for avocado that is ripe, yet firm.

How Many Avocados?

Plan for 1/2 an avocado per slice of toasted bread. The amount needed may vary depending on the type/size of your bread as well as the size of your avocado.

How to Make Avocado Toast

  1. Pick your bread…then toast it! You may use any bread, but one that is sliced thick enough (at least 1/4-inch) is the way to go. I love everything, but especially love thick sliced sourdough bread and whole-grain or multi grain bread.
  2. Smash or slice the avocado. Smashed or sliced avocados are both great, but avoid over-mashing and keep in mind that sliced avocados can be somewhat slippery. If you’re mashing, add a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to the avocado mixture to prevent the avocado from browning prematurely.
  3. Divide and spread. Spread the smashed or sliced avocado over each slice of bread and drizzle with olive oil.
  4. Season or pile with your favorite toppings. I highly recommend a little flaky sea salt, black pepper, and just a pinch of red pepper flakes. A little everything bagel seasoning is also delicious.

Recipe Variations

Just about anything can go on top of avocado toast, but here are some of the most popular:

I use lemon juice and a small amount of Extra virgin olive oil while I’m smashing the avocado. I sprinkle with onion and garlic powder and mix. Sometimes I use a little paprika. Mix and put on 12 grain toast. I put on a few tomato slices and eat it open face. It’s very filling and keeps me full until lunch.
