I can’t remember if I’ve talked about my obsession with passion fruit on here before? Soooo, any guesses what that means?! That’s what I’m going to be chatting about today. Yes, it’s the day of the passion fruit.

Just kidding. I’m actually here to share these ridiculously easy Cereal Yogurt Pops with you.

but…but…BUUUUUUT!

They were completely, entirely, one hundred million percent inspired by my all-time favorite fruit. The passion fruit.

Before I tell you about my love story with this sweet, tart, and beautiful little fruit, let’s have a quick chat about the cereal yogurt pops. Don’t worry, it will be real quick (I know you’re just dying to get to the juicy part of this post) because these beauties are made with JUST 4 INGREDIENTS.

Yes, FOUR. So aside from a popsicle mold, all you will need is,

  • passion fruit
  • yogurt
  • honey
  • rice cereal

This is the popsicle popsicle mold that I use.

The ingredients are simple and easy because sometimes it’s the simple thing in life that taste so darn good.

Now, yes, passion fruit can sometimes be tricky to track down and may be seasonal. I don’t know. I can’t keep up with grocery stores these days. However, I have found that here in California, most markets carry these little balls of gold (except for Trader Joe’s. He…or she…most definitely does not). I have also heard that some markets sell the pulp in frozen packets, but I have yet to see this with my own two eyes.

If you can’t find passion fruit, I highly recommend jumping on a plane to New Zealand where it is in every single market…

Totally kidding. Unless you can, in which case, TAKE ME WITH YOU!

If all is lost, don’t worry (too much). Blend up some of your fav fruit in a blender and voila!! You have pulp! No, not as good as passion fruit, but it will do.

These little cereal yogurt pops are perfect for just about any occasion. Breakfast, snack, dessert…boredom.

One last bit before I get to the love story (I know, I’m dying, too). Be very careful when choosing the yogurt for these tasty cereal yogurt pops. Why? I’m going to tell you why.

Yogurt that is not plain is PACKED with a CRAP TON of sugar. Now, I’m not saying that I recommend plain yogurt for these popsicles. Because I don’t. These are meant to be on the sweeter side. However, have you ever looked at how much sugar is in flavored yogurt? No, really, I’m asking you this for real. Because it’s a lot.

If you have no idea what a lot looks like just remember that 4 grams are equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar.

So, when I was shopping for yogurt to use, you can imagine my surprise when I discovered that one brand (I honestly can’t remember the brand) had 35 grams of sugar in just one cup.

You guys do the math.

Actually, I’ll do it. That equals 8 3/4 teaspoons of sugar in one cup. Honestly, I don’t even know how that is possible, but apparently, it is.

Moral of the story? Read labels.

Ok, so the love story bit. yes yes yes.

I learned about passion fruit while traveling through Cambodia way back in 2011. My husband and I spent a few weeks meandering through temples jungles so we decided to make a deal that every day we would try a new fruit (until we ran out of new fruits to try).

Passion fruit was one of the first.

We took it along on one of our daily temple trips as a little snack. The market sold them in a pack of 6, so, lucky for us, we were in for a real treat. We sat on a heavy sturdy branch under a big shady tree and cut them open with our trusted pocket knife. They were an instant favorite.

On the other side of the tree sat a monk in a bright saffron-colored robe. I had seen him sitting over there earlier, but then he got up and started walking over our way. He approached us, bowed, and pointed to the passion fruit. He didn’t speak English, but we understood that he was asking to try one.

We said yes, obviously.

And so, for a few moments, under a large tree and just outside of the once towering Angkor Wat, three virtually identical, but utterly unique individuals shared the fruits of this earth with each other. All for the very first time. It was a magical experience I will never forget.

It was one of those moments that cemented inside my soul a love of travel.

Passion Fruit Yogurt Cereal Pops Recipe

Ingredients 

  • 2/4 cup passion fruit pulp, (approx 5 passion fruit)
  • 3 cups plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • 1 cup rice cereal

Instructions 

  • Scoop the passion fruit pulp from the inside of each passion fruit into a small bowl. Set aside.
  • In a separate, clean bowl combine the yogurt with the honey and stir to combine.
  • Carefully spoon approximately 1-2 teaspoons passion fruit pulp into each popsicle mold followed by the yogurt until each mold is approximately 1/2 way full. Add 1-2 tablespoons rice cereal (if desired), any remaining passionfruit, and fill with remaining yogurt.
  • Freeze for at least 4 hours.
